strange, what issue are you having with wayland
a better option is to install the lite version & build up from there. you can go full install with task-gnome-desktop or minimal with gnome-core.
it's pretty much debian so you can follow any of there directions for a desktop or window manager.
just remember to
sudo systemctl set-default graphical.target
before reboot to boot to gui.
