Bit baffled by 'I was using a power plug (into the mains)'...
Is it a Pi power supply or something else?
The lack of any screen output does not sound good but it could be as simple as a dodgy power supply or USB cable (or dead Pi).
Do you have a multimeter? If so you can check the 5V and 3v3 on the GPIO (PLEASE PLEASE do not short the pins) to do a little power supply verification - pin details can be found at https://pinout.xyz if you are not sure - all 5v are common, all 3v3 are common and all grounds are common.
Have you also unplugged everything but the screen and power supply - I've seen a faulty HAT hang a Pi like this.
