I've always found that the best way to tackle something new for which I'm lacking a plan is to simply bite the bullet and get started. I figure I'll learn some stuff working through that, and might actually make some progress.
Re (a): I had no clear plan. I'd never needed to repeatedly install images until I bought a batch of rpiZ/rpiZW way back which I needed to come up headless. That was about the only time I sat down and thought about it. There are hints of sanity regarding the udisksctl routines for example. The help options are actually the order in which I originally wrote the parts. I only ever use "--all" and "--post". Much time passed then I started to need to write normal rpi images .. so just fudged stuff in.
Three weeks for me to reply. On the plus side, this isn't the end, but with yesterday out the way (herding cats), it may be the end of the beginning.
