I will test upgrading to the most recent kernel and setting the mode via cmdline.txt again, propably I will only get around to do that by the end of the week.
If I am not mistaken, it looks like your display actually reports the 1024x600 resolution with a divisible /2 frequency. So I guess the manufacturer fixed the EDID in some newer revision.
