The Pi 1B+ is around 12 years old. It has a single 32-bit ARM CPU running at 700MHz and 512MB of memory. Compare that to the Pi 5 with four 64-bit ARM CPUs running at up to 3000MHz and 4096MB or 8192MB of memory. The resto fthe Pi 5 is faster too.
The Pi 1B+ is not suited to running a modern desktop system. It struggled to run a desktop when it was new and couldn't run a full browser even back then.
It is fine for simple command line work, and even usable as a simple server.
For desktop get a PI 4B or 5. The 5 is about $5 more than a similar 4B and 2.5 times faster.
