How expensive really depends on when it was purchased. Right now registered 32GB DDR4 memory sticks are $40 new at consumer pricing. Four of them would be $160 plus tax which isn't much more than a couple good raspberry pies.Sounds like an expensive machine, could 8 x Pi5 8GB run Wordpress?ive seen a story before, where the customer assumed you need 1gig of ram for every visitor on the site
and she wanted to support 100 visitors
so she got a server with 128gig of ram
she then filed a chargeback on the creditcard, when she was told it doesnt come with wordpress pre-installed
Is there anything like the Wordpress software that could run an online store on a Pi5?
The used market is cheaper with 1U rackmount 12-core 128GB RAM servers running $140 on ebay. Used means no tax in the States, but it's better to buy from a local source where you can fetch and take it to the collocation site yourself.
How much one needs for Wordpress depends on which plugins are used and how many users will be active at a time. My suggestion would be to provision a free instance in the cloud and check if that works. Once free is not sufficient, buy a single device twice as powerful as needed (for example, a Pi 5) and collocate it in the cheapest data center available (for example, the bedroom closet).
If that is not enough, then an x86 server, but maybe not in the bedroom.
According to the dog developer it only makes sense to scale a workload out to multiple machines when a single large server is not enough to handle the load. On the other hand learning how to distribute a load out to multiple Raspberry Pi computers might have enough employment value that one could be hired to do the same with more capable machines later.
Unfortunately, nobody wants to buy stuff from an online store running on a Pi in someone's bedroom closet--even if the product is as ground breaking as the latest edition of FidoBasic.
