Automation, sensing and robotics • Re: How to control low voltage AC motors

Guys,

There is actually a clever way to switch an AC current with a transistor by using a bridge rectifier to route the positive and negative half cycles through the transistor in the correct direction.

SImply connect the AC that needs switching to the AC inputs of the bridge rectifier and the transistor, taking care to observe the correct polarity, across what would normally be the DC output terminals.

Be aware that this is approach is limited to low voltage AC systems and the motor supply must be isolated from the Pi other than at the appropriate terminal of the bridge rectifier/switch transistor emiter. Any higher voltage, that's much over 25VAC needs to treated with great care as does any high current circuits.
