Using the supplied one probably was current at the time, it is still the same OS, they just tweak and add fix things in the past few months.
The reason for using another uSD is you always have your old one to work with to check things.
You could check you are using X11 and not Wayland, an option in raspi-config
You could post your bootup settings.
Then hope someone can help you.
Screen tearing may be fixed in Wayland/labwc, I don't know.
It could just be the screen.
It may be the update you did copied and backup your old login tweaks and settings too.
