For reasons I've yet to understand, I can't get my preferred NAS software (Open Media Vault) running on my Pi 4 4Gb so I'm looking for something else that will do more-or-less the same.
Have you tried to install OMV on top of RPiOS?
Or just downloaded a pre-installed OMV image and put that on the Pi4 SD-card?

I tested once 3 NAS solutions (for a friend of mine who hates computers and has no IT skills) and remember that OMV was the best choice. OMV is Debian Linux based, that is why I think it is 'the best', it runs on all sorts of computers. It would allow you to transition to own maintained system later on as thagrol writes. That is also what I do myself. I use NFS and Samba, so just general GNU Linux components. But more complex disk/storage setup than OMV can handle. I would need to buy a Synology NAS or so for that I guess, that is of course a no-go for me after 30 years of Samba usage.

Recent additions to NFS and Samba methods I did was (Network Block Device) NBD. I do not know if OMV supports it, but is standard in Linux as packages 'nbd-server' and 'nbd-client'. It is manual edit of config file and does not share files but a whole harddisk or whatever blockdevice created by a volume manager or image file. So I can use a complete 8 TeraByte HDD with a Pi up to about 100 meters away via gigabit network. I actually realize now that this is not NAS but should be called SAN. Also nothing new, iSCSI is the 'professional' variant.
