Yes, I think you will need to "spoof" the existence of an attached display if you don't have one. Edit your /boot/firmware/cmdline.txt and add a space and the following to the end of the line:

(and reboot.)

Sorry that the addition to the cmdline.txt did not work... the image from the rpicam-hello command is still showing up on the real display when I reconnect it to the RPiZ2 W
