You may find better information if you search using the term directory instead of folder, and group permissions instead of sharing. The title of your post sounds more like a question about network shares than local Unix file permissions.
To access a file by absolute path you need at least execute and preferably read permission on every parent directory all the back to /, in case you did not realize that.
