sounds like this is way above your head...

Your drive needs two different voltages: 5V (0.9A max current) and 12V (1.4A max current). If yoi need details/explaination on what each voltage is used for you will have to ask Hitachi-LG as they are the manufacturer.

If you have no idea on voltage and current you should use wiki.
Thanks for the explaination! This is what I wanted to know.

I think we're going a bit off-topic :P . I read that the 5 volt in question needs to be reduced down to the 3.3 volt the drive needs, so I still need to know if I can't just directly connect it to a 3.3 volt pin.
But after reading all this I'm wondering whether it's true that the drive needs 3.3 volt instead of 5.
