With a good power supply, things look nice. If it needs good power delivery, the long wires are not ideal because the MAX98357 datasheet does talk a lot about layout and grounding. Shorter wires or additional capacitance (at the breakout board) may have an effect, because when the audio crackles in the beginning, it's almost like the chip drained the 10uF on the breakout board and depressed voltage too much before the wires can catch up.
