My setup is like this:

HQ Camera
40mm extension tube ($2 aliexpress)
Arducam 35mm C mount lens ($50)
30.5mm to 37mm lens adapter ($1 aliexpress)
6mm aperture mask (3d printed)
37mm to 55mm lens adapter ring ($1 aliexpress)
12V 5W 50mm cob led ring ($7 aliexpress)
heat conductive epoxy (to glue the LED to the final adapter ring, $10 ebay)

The camera is then mounted to a 3D printer to do automated scanning, with Z axis used to focus.

The aperture mask is the most simple part and also the most important. It's literally just a thin disc with a 6mm diameter hole in the middle. Due to the extreme zoom, most of the image projected by the lens does not fall directly on the sensor, and that light will instead bounce around and diffuse inside the system, making the image washed out. The mask simply blocks that light before it even enters the lens.

Pretty much any lens can be used for a setup like this as long as it has threads on both ends.

Automated scans (use mousewheel to zoom):

The absolute max I ever got from this setup:
