Adding my data point here:
- geekworm X1002 board, (it is slightly different, bottom mount)
- nvme Samsung SM961
RaspiOS works fine and boots from NVME.
Ubuntu (booted from sd-card) can't enumerate the NVME drive, with the same error during early boot "brcm-pcie ... link-down".
Tried Ubutnu 23.10 and the daily preview build of 24.04 - same result. Both come with identical kernel revision though, linux-image-raspi_6.5.0.1009.
Thus I conclude that geekworm nvme boards are fine, hardware-wise, and the problem is likely in the Ubuntu kernel. I'd also give running RaspiOS with the 6.6.x kernel a shot; testing for it started not too long ago. Maybe the problem isn't specific to Ubuntu, but to the upstream kernel in general.
