Probably a little late to the party, but I wrote an image of 24.04.2 LTS with Pi Imager, which installed ok.
Takes longer to boot than PiOS. The applications I tried from the snap store worked fine,
while the Debian packages offered on the store are very hit and miss, which could also be a fault from my side.
I wonder when the 500 will be certified. I remember, in 2019, when the 400 was introduced it also took a while before
other OSs picked up the slightly different hardware specs.
At that time the move to 64-bit also played a role, afaik.
