Sorry, it took time - the computers were physically assembled into devices. What happens if you swap the SD cards between the two Pi computers?
If I disassemble and swap cards, the old computer remains usable. The new computer that was without WiFi after cloning, remains without WiFi after getting the old system's card - which is logical since I cloned the card byte for byte.
I can only conclude that the problem is somewhere in EEPROM or other non-volatile memory.
The question for more knowledgeable people remains - is this a case where one should "rpi-update", or is there a milder course of action?
E.g. is there a way of updating EEPROM without updating the kernel? I already have a kernel that works with the new (May 8 15:21:35 UTC 2025) EEPROM and I've built some external (Alfa AWUS 1900) WiFi drivers against it - I would hate to go building them again.
