Camera board • Re: Syncing IMX708 captures on RPi 5?

MMAL never supported hardware synchronisation - it programmed the two sensors with the same frame lengths, and started them at as close to the same moment as possible (separate I2C messages have to be sent to the 2 cameras, but as they share the same controller they will be sequential). The two sensors have independent oscillators and PLLs, so will drift over time.

The IMX708 sensor from Sony does support signals for synchronising sensors, but the company that packages them into a module with the lens assembly haven't brought those signals to the external connector that we plug onto the Raspberry Pi board. Hardware synchronisation of multiple modules is therefore not possible.

With IMX477 (HQ) and IMX296 (global shutter) camera modules we're mounting the Sony sensor directly onto our board, therefore have all the options over what signals to route to where, and there the hardware synchronisation signals are exposed.
