From a practical point of view I certainly dont have the skills to roll my own solution so Raspberrypi-Connect looks as though it will be safest option.

To avoid forwarding a port accessible from the whole Internet through your router, Raspberry Pi Connect establishes a reverse tunnel which is only accessible from what you call the middle-man.
Provided you can trust the middle-man, this is what provides the additional security.
