Nice idea but I don't think soIn spite of his Samba expertise, I'm confused by @hortimech's focus on this being an smb.conf issue.

This sounds like an MDNS (or DNS) issue to me.
OP, is it possible that the Pi at 192.168.1.8 and the Pi at 192.168.1.10 have the same hostname?
