NVMe is an interface standard used by *some* SSDs. The other interface used is SATA. The Pi-500+ come with a 256GB NVMe drive installed within it. It can use NVMe SSDs in 2230, 2242, or 2280 (physical) sizes. You can certainly get NVME drives up to 4TB capacity that will fit, and probably--I haven't specifically looked--up to 8TB.
