Identifying an animal from your camera experience would be good. All the species I mentioned are introduced predators killing local fauna in large parts of Australia. Identifying them is enough. The locals can then take action. As an example, horses destroying national parks can be captured and moved. A cheap Pi with a camera could be put on a tree to could the animals.
Currently there are people using a Pi with a camera to detect movement and video it. Humans then have to count. Just a program to identify the main animals would work. Perhaps you could take a Pi number plate recognition program and modify it to identify a fox. You could write about the problem of telling the difference between a dog and a fox.
After graduation, you could start a business. Australia gets about one new introduced bad species per year. The veroa mite arrived last year and is already out of control.
