I had trouble making backups on the entire OS a few months ago. Before, I set up an entire OS again on an extra microSD card. Unfortunately, it was not a good solution as I have many Raspberry Pis.
Now I have started with PiSafe instead. I set up everything the way I want it with programs and everything, and save a backup on it. I can always go back to it if something goes wrong. Takes 3-5 minutes and everything is as I want it again.
Will make a new one if there are major changes to the Raspberry Pi OS. Otherwise, just update the one I've already done.
