Does this mean it is impossible to use a Pi Camera as a standard video device ?
No, libcamera provides a V4L2 compatibility shim that can make a libcamera device look like a V4L2 one.
There is also native GStreamer support for libcamera if that is your chosen framework.
And it's actually slightly awkward in that libcamera uses V4L2 devices for the sensor driver, CSI2 receiver, and for the ISP. Most of those paths are for Bayer images though, and exposure, gain, and white balance are all run in userspace controlling that pipeline.
Thanks for the clarification although it's still not extremely clear to me
Feel like I could give it a try... maybe... but my area is really broadcast and webcast with standard AV gear (real cameras for real cameramen, capture cards, switchers, etc...) and mainly FFmpeg when I need to script processes.
I'm using RPI more and more in my workflows but obviously the lack of GPU is a real problem and there are already so many things to work on to keep up that I'm not quite ready to add diversity or new tools and devices - especially not proprietary ones like yours - to my daily worries...
I'll still keep an eye on what's being said in the forum though, I like to learn and understand...
