It is not clear to me what was wrong.
Though probably not helpful, I'll repeat some ideas the three kittens were discussing over dinner.
Shy suspects the system automounter service interrupts the write because the device isn't exclusively locked. Purr claims the way the USB driver works in MacOS leads to short writes which need to be repeated with the remaining data to fully flush the buffer. Scratchy hissed the problem is the same as with all GUI system tools: The errors written to stderr disappear so nobody can tell what the error is when there is an error.
After dinner there was a language war whether to rewrite version 3.x.x in assembly language, Visual Basic or Swift. For obvious reasons I have not related the details here.
