So it isn't gzip files it's tools/protocols that use gzip compression when transferring data.
Not sure what might cause that but the first things I'd be trying is increasing swap size (and using "real" swap space not just zram) and making sure I have enough room in /tmp.
Or just take the performance hit of uncompressed transfers. Slower is better than not at all.
