The delay in startup was recommended because there was a risk that the player will start before the network libraries are loaded. Now the player is a service. In the service configuration file it's defined that network libraries should be loaded first:

To pinpoint the freezing issue could you leave only wired connection (disconnect Wi-Fi). Which screensaver do you use?
There is no need to do anything for touchscreens which handle touch events over USB. That's required only for displays which do that over SPI interface (GPIO connection). To make a touchscreen working you need to know which chip is used for that in your display. Then do this (assuming chip ADS7846):
