That is clear to me, but as I indicated, I am not sure when this "connection.autoconnect-slaves 1" became the default. And I want to have some sort of easy to remember control over what is connected (cables) or not. Already before RPiOS Bookworm, other distros. udev rules could help there, but NM I find more convenient. Not so much for RPis, but for other SBC's and various kernels/DTBs/firmware.
Are you misinterpeting what default means?

From the NM documentation (https://networkmanager.dev/docs/api/lat ... nmcli.html):
The permitted values are: 0: leave slave connections untouched, 1: activate all the slave connections with this connection, -1: default. If -1 (default) is set, global connection.autoconnect-slaves is read to determine the real value. If it is default as well, this fallbacks to 0.
