As an old guy my new motto is: If at first you don't succeed, give up and find something you can actually do.
The only reason I was trying this was to learn something about partitioning, mounting, etc. But, it turned out to be impossibly hard and horribly frustrating for me. So...
What I did was use the SD Card Copier in the GUI to copy the boot SD to the external SSD which I will now use for booting the Pi, and, hopefully, to create boot SD Cards for the other two Pi 4s that I own.
Anyway, thanks to all for offering assistance.
