OK and if you then power off the HDMI monitor (TV) but leave the pi powered on, what happens to SSH?
I'd advise going further: shutdown the Pi the same way you have been doing, disconnect the TV, boot Pi. Does the problem persist?
And what system are you using to SSH into the Zero - maybe a PC or laptop?
Also, what's the exact error being produced?
