I was wrong about it not being described in official documentation. At least it is now. It is another case of information being spread all over the place and not being where I was expecting it to be, where I looked. I was expecting it to be in PDF form as the Debug Probe Product Brief and most product documentation is but that's not so.
Maybe the Official Raspberry Pi Video "Connecting up a Debug Probe" should show that being done ... ?And the rest is a basic principle in electronics, connect the ground first.
