I don't know about them, but many others use Lidar, you can buy the sensor for £25 or so. I'm sure some use better versions now.
Mix that with cameras and other things.
Many moved to AI, so use the cloud for that rather than local AI. That's why when they're cut from the internet, say taken to a local setup in HomeAssistant, they loose some functionality.
